(Basque dialogue)"What continues towards the eyes, occurs our souls," states one of the figures in "Two Brothers and sisters," and rookie scribe-helmer Imanol Rayo seems to own taken this to heart for his adaptation of Basque novelist Bernardo Atxaga's dark novella. There is not an regular frame throughout this impeccably designed tale of two siblings and siblings inside the 19 fifties Basque Country, while using exquisite lensing and appear design -- all ticking clocks, creaking floormats, dogs too much barking inside the distance -- doing more to totally immerse auds in comparison to meager scraps of narrative. Fests not frightened of heavily atmospheric fare will fraternize. First word uttered, some six minutes in, is "Silence," and doubles just like a statement of intent. Following a dying from the father, youthful Paulo (Bingen Elortza, photogenic and pensive) will need to take proper care of his slightly older, disabled brother, Daniel (Aitor Coteron, remarkably mercurial), especially after Daniel's fascination with a significant girl (Loreto Mauleon) causes trouble. Like the recent Basque feature "The Stone," "Two Brothers and sisters" works extremely well in creating a sense of place. Heavily symbolic imagery, for instance apples and snakes, is generally more telling than any direct story particulars.Camera (color), Javier Agirre Erauso editor, Guille Sanchez Mahave art director, Peio Villalba costume designer, Josune Lasa. Examined at San Sebastian Film Festival (Zinemira Premieres), Sept. 20, 2011. Running time: 104 MIN. Contact Boyd van Hoeij at news@variety.com
